People of a certain generation may recall the United States' year-long bicentennial celebration in 1976,
when the country was nearly drowning in bicentennial trinkets, memorabilia, souvenirs, and a plethora of other items to buy.
The United States Mint created a series of bicentennial quarters to celebrate the anniversary,
several of which are now quite valuable as the country approaches its 250th birthday. A Lincoln Penny With This Distinctive Mark Could Be Worth $60,000
The bicentennial coins were produced as a special edition by the Mint between 1975 and 1976, according to the Chronicle Collectibles website.
They were important because they were the first US quarters with a distinct reverse design in over 50 years.
The most valuable of the coins, a 1976-S Bicentennial Silver Quarter with a very high grade,
old for $19,200 at auction a few years ago, according to the Chronicle Collectibles website.
