Dwight Howard and Isaiah Thomas to Re-Enter the NBA?
The league is interested in having two previous All-Star players back. Dwight Howard recently posted on X:
Thomas remarked, "I'm still trying to play basketball," to Mat Issa of Forbes. I want to play in the NBA again. I'm still training and preparing, so."
First up is Howard, a 38-year-old center who was chosen first overall in the 2004 NBA draft. In 2021–2022, Howard last participated in a game for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Within 16.2 minutes, he averaged 6.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks while shooting 61.2 percent overall in his 60 games, of which he started 27.
Following that, he played in Taiwan from 2022 to 2023 with the Taoyuan Leopards. Without being called up to the NBA, 34-year-old Thomas participated in 22 games for the Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and Charlotte Hornets in 2021–2022.
Despite playing nearly exclusively as a reserve, he scored 8.4 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 15.1 minutes while shooting just 40.1 percent overall. Howard, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame, is among the top defensive players of the past 20 years.
Thomas had a huge influence on the Boston Celtics, going from being the last pick in the lottery to being an All-Star twice. But this is the right time for them to relax and enjoy their NBA retirement. A year out of the league won't make players in their mid-to late-30s any better when they return.
That is the honest, brutal truth. Both might, meanwhile, still play elsewhere and make a good living. NBA teams are giving their final roster spots to young players rather than veterans who can contribute whether they participate or not.
This may be unfair, but it's the reality. Howard and Thomas are probably done. If either player opts to accept a new NBA contract, the BS Meter will read BS. If it had been scheduled, it would have happened last season.
