Jakub Vrana on Waivers, Should Penguins Take a Look?

Jakub Vrana, a former Washington Capitals winger, is available. The LW was placed on waivers by the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, one day later than scheduled, and teams will have until 2 p.m. Wednesday to decide if he's worth another risk.

Despite a -12 goal differential, the Blues are just one point off of a Western Conference wild-card place.

In Vrana's absence owing to a lack of output, Jake Neighbors, Brandon Saad, and Kevin Hayes fill up the Blues' top-nine left wings.

Vrana underwent severe shoulder surgery on the eve of the 2021-22 NHL season and only appeared in 26 games for the Detroit Red Wings.

Last season, he only played five more games before joining the player treatment program and being moved to St. Louis, where he played 20.

Vrana has appeared in 19 games this season and has six points (2-4-6) with a minus-5 rating. His advanced metrics are also at career lows. Corsi is in the 41-42% range for scoring chances and predicted goals.

No, according to this keyboard. The Penguins have enough struggling guys. Is Jansen Harkins or Radim Zohorna superior?

Unlikely, but neither of those players adds to the Penguins' cap predicament. The $2.62 million cap hit on Vrana (Detroit is eating half of his $5.2 million AAV) is the clincher.
