Massive Trade Idea Between Lakers and Grizzlies Proposed

Ja Morant, the Memphis Grizzlies' standout point guard, will miss the rest of the season due to season-ending shoulder surgery.

This has led some to conclude that the Grizzlies will be sellers at the trade deadline. In a recent piece, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report presented a potential deal between the Grizzlies, Los Angeles Lakers, and Brooklyn Nets:

Grizzlies get Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, Harry Giles III, a 2029 first-round pick, and trade exceptions ($8.3 million, $2.4 million, and $1.9 million).

Laker acquires Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, John Konchar, Xavier Tillman, Dorian Finney-Smith, and a trade exception ($10.5 million).

Nets acquire D'Angelo Russell, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and trade exceptions ($14 million, $2 million).

This transaction gives the Lakers some new rotation pieces who may suit better than their existing roster of role players.

Brooklyn re-signs an old buddy in D'Angelo Russell and adds an interesting rookie in Jalen Hood-Schifino. Memphis receives a potentially valuable 2029 choice as well as four players.

The argument offered by Pincus in his essay is convoluted, but Memphis is exiting Smart's contract, which will cost them more than $40 million over the next two seasons.
