NHL futures: How risky a bet are the Rangers to win the Cup?
If you've been keeping track of which NHL team has the highest chance of winning the Stanley Cup this season, you've surely noticed the New York Rangers' odds have shrunk significantly in just a few weeks.
A hot November has made Peter Laviolette's club more tempting to bookmakers, and the Blueshirts are currently neck-and-neck with the Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche as +750 (15-2) favorites to lift Lord Stanley's Mug at DraftKings.
However, as you are surely aware, Stanley Cups are not won in December. With so much regular-season hockey remaining, how safe are the Rangers this season?
While the Rangers have won several games, they aren't always a sure thing when it comes to betting.
According to Action Network, New York is 7-3-0 in their previous ten games but has only covered the spread four times.
In fact, the Rangers had failed to cover in six consecutive games, regardless of whether they were the favorite or the underdog, before defeating the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 on Sunday night as 1.5-point underdogs.
They have won as the moneyline favorite six times in that time, but have disappointed gamblers by losing to lower-tier opponents such as the Buffalo Sabres and the Ottawa Senators.
New York has also been letting up a lot of goals recently, making them a dangerous gamble. The Blueshirts haven't thrown a shutout since a 1-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov. 22, and have allowed two or more goals in seven of the nine games since then.
