People of a particular generation may recall the year-long bicentennial celebration of 1976, when the United States celebrated its 200th birthday
the country was practically drowning in bicentennial trinkets, collectibles, souvenirs, and numerous other things to buy.
To commemorate the event, the United States Mint issued a series of bicentennial quarters
many of which are now worth a lot of money as the country approaches its 250th birthday.
According to the Chronicle Collectibles website, the bicentennial coins were manufactured as a special edition by the Mint between 1975 and 1976.
They were significant for being the first US quarters with a distinctive reverse design in more than 50 years.
According to the Chronicle Collectibles website, the most valuable of the coins — a 1976-S Bicentennial Silver Quarter with a very high grade
— sold for $19,200 at auction a few years ago. But that isn't the only bicentennial quarter that is worth a lot of money.
