With the premiere of "Outlander," high-seas drama has come.

Captain Black Jack Randall died in season three of Outlander, prompting questions about whether the tyrannical redcoat was based on a real person.

Captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, played by Tobias Menzies, died a few seasons ago.Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) defeated the evil enemy in the Battle of Culloden.

During his stint on the show, ''Black Jack'' established himself as the most aggressive and vicious character.

He was quite tough, resorting to violence to ensure he got what he needed from the program. Because of his torturous techniques, he was reviled and detested throughout the Outlander universe.

People have questioned whether the idea that "Black Jack" was based on a real person is true.

However, how much of the character's inspiration originated from the imagination of US novelist Diana Gabaldon and how much came from reality?

In contrast to other characters on the show, some sources indicate that the character was not based on any real-life Jacobite figures.

Outlander featured real-life characters such as the Duke of Sandringham (Simon Callow) and Bonnie Prince Charlie (Andrew Gower).
